AboutMaurice Nuiten, 1990, Roosendaal & Nispen, The Netherlands Saturday, September 5, 2020
At the moment I am: I take place in space and time. This because I was born, a choice that was made for me. Even when I stand still I move, this cannot be stopped and that creates situations. Why are we here? This existential question forms the core from which further research and work arises. I use objects, situations and observations from everyday life to show the paradoxical nature of life to me. I am looking for meaning. This by moments that I try to capture, even if only for a moment. Life comes with love and loss, social pressure and expectations; condition humaine. So now we are here and now, but now it is already over. It’s past the moment you think about it. It is already part of the past, but the past cannot be changed and all we have left is the future. Words I have spoken cannot be undone, just like my little actions, they are done. Irreversible. Everything passes, nothing remains. And at the same time I live here and now. This is the paradox of life. The art is to live and continue to create every day, face to face with this knowledge. I want to show this paradox by depicting the human condition. With this I want to give meaning to my existence through my artistry and create meaning in the work I make. At the same time, I keep asking the question “why are we here” again and again, because the question remains. This expresses the existential and personal character of my work. To be born means to die. But we cannot know what will happen to us today or in the future. We have no real control over our lives. We are equal in this. I will be happy is my self-fulfilling prophecy. By excluding what makes me happy I hope to be able to conclude, I do this by trying to calibrate life by facts, such as mathematics and science. With that I try to fathom my / our existence. Perhaps in vain. After all, we must not forget that life is a story that each of us tells his / her own ego; and therefore it is a story told by an unreliable narrator. However, performance forms the basis of the work, both as a form of research but also as a method to arrive at the final image or text. In his practice as a curator he has a focus on on personal stories, performance and lens-based media, queer-studies and gender-studies. With a critical view he produce shows that show what it means to be human in this day and age and how the personal is political.
